Day 32 - Friday Tip #2 from Barb - Soda is BAD for You?

WooHoo, it's Friday. Not that it means much around here with the end of summer fast approaching and a move across town that is threatening to drive me insane.

But ONE AWEsome thing about Fridays now, is that I'm bringing you a great fitness tip each week, right from our own Barb - who just spent a WHOLE week in Maine and didn't come see me.

:( = sad face.

But alas, she wasn't vacationing alone and you KNOW how THAT goes.

So...

Barb's Tip for This Fabulous Friday?

FITNESS TIP #2:  Stay Away From The Soda Pop

Are you a soda pop drinker?  Did you know that a regular can of Coca-cola has about 40 grams of sugar in it?  It also contains caffeine which can cause swelling and increase high blood pressure.  Diet soda pop is an unhealthy choice as well.  Most diet pops contain artificial sweeteners which are not good for your body and some contain a high level of salt to help flavor the drink.  Diet pop can cause you to crave sweets.  What's a healthy alternative to soda pop?  Water.  Aim to drink at least eight glasses a day.  Try adding a wedge of lemon or frozen grapes to add flavor to the water.

A GREAT tip, YAY!

Barb's right, you may love that sticky sweet drink, but it is NOT healthy for you. Even the diet soda is a no-no when you are life-changing. Because we don't CALL it dieting, right? We are changing our lives and in doing so, must remove all soda from our diets.

It's funny...growing up, we called it pop. Down south it's called soda; unless you're in Texas and there they simply call everything Coke. Want a coke? Okay, here's your Sprite.

And up here in the great Pine State, we also call it soda. I love the diversity but the soda-pop-coke-WHATEVER has got to go.

That's your Barb Tip for THIS Friday and now you know.

Want to know something else?

I'm going to tell you, anyway, surprise SURPRISE...

I forgot to weigh in this morning. Until after I'd eaten my breakfast and had drunk 28 oz. of water.

Der.

So the scale was not my bestie, but I'm not concerned because I've heard tell that a whole bowl of fruit and 3.5 glasses of water can really pack the pounds on - at least .8 pounds, anyway.

Till next time!

Day 31 - Rainy Days and What to DO...

This is NOT what I was going to post today so if you are here because I perked your interest with yesterday's post, I'm sorry. I changed my mind.

It happens.

But today I thought I would share what my plan is for getting in my 10,000 steps AND how I'm going to amuse my kiddo (WHEN does school start, again?).

Okay, first of all, I want you all to know that I have gained. After that AMAZING 3.8 pounds down, I have gained.

2 ounces. OMG, seriously?

No.

I'm not being serious - meaning I'm not upset about it. I know weight fluctuates daily and a two ounce gain is perfectly okay.

In the past, however?

BAHAHAHHAHA.

I would have been ballistic about it. I would have totally self-sabotaged and spent serious time derailing in ways that would boggle your mind (yes, it will all be in the book).

BUT...

I'm not going to do that, today.

Today is rainy here in ole P-town. And I've gotta figure a way to get my steps, amuse the kid, and do it all indoors.

Easy Peasy.

First step, taking G to work so we girls can have the car.

Second step, going to Walmart to get cat food. No, we don't HAVE to go ALL the way to Scarborough Walmart, but with more than 200,000 square feet AND a FAB selection of Iams Cat Food, we're going to truck on over and have ourselves a little indoor time at the WALLY WORLD.

Mags doesn't know it yet, but mom is planning hot feet all around that place WITHOUT filling our cart with things we don't need.

THEN, we'll drop back home for a healthy lunch (so I can share that fab ditty with you, soon) and then it's off to the pool. We are fortunate to have one hotel in our area that offers day rates for their pool to locals; and Mags and I are going to take full advantage of that feature, today.

Do you KNOW how many calories you can burn in a pool?

A LOT.

Especially since my kid is half a fish and we'll be in it till the bitter end - picking up G from work.

And that's it. Walking and swimming today, a bit unconventional, both. But we'll have some fun and get our exercise on, YAY!

So, if you find it rainy in your neck of the woods, get creative. Find something indoors and make it COUNT. You don't have to spend lots of money to do so; just go, have fun, and make yourself proud.

Till next time!

Day 30 - Mixing it Up - A New Exercise?

I had absolutely no idea what I was going to post today. I thought about trying a wordless Wednesday post but I honestly can't see myself posting without words. I am simply too verbose.

And I have a huge list of future posts planned (like tomorrow's fabulous little ditty, stay tuned for that).

But today I had nothing...

...Until I went to my inbox this morning and discovered a tip from Stephanie - just LIKE that link and you'll get cool tips too!

Ya see, she's taken over for Barb (because Barb's on vaca this week) and has been posting tips - just like Barb - daily.

And it would seem that I missed this tip on Sunday but I opened it today and was instantly inspired.

YAY.

Her tip?

Mix it Up - A new exercise or food can perk up your metabolism.

She then went on to share what you can do to spark things up...

(from Stephanie):

"Exercise - If you only do treadmill, try a bike or elliptical.
Don’t be afraid to try a new piece of Nautilus equipment. Start at a low weight and work yourself up.
Jump rope and hula hoops are not just for kids.
Instead of walking a track or a setting path on a sidewalk, try an outdoor nature area, and ‘hike in the wild'.
Swimming - while we still have a little summer left.
Try a new Food- Do you love mashed potatoes, go half and half - cauliflower or celery root.
Cold gazpacho soup. Blend fresh tomatoes, seeded Cucumber, fresh peppers, onion, a clove of garlic. Dice finely, additional vegetables to add to the puree. At serving, garnish with lime or lemon wedges, Cilantro, or Basil.
Spaghetti Squash instead of pasta."

Brilliant, huh?

(Ohhhhh, I know what you're thinkin'...It's not FRIDAY...just chilly chill, I'm working something in, today.)

So I read this tip this morning and then I went down and hopped on my beloved scale. DOWN 3.8 more pounds, WooHOO!

And I think I know why.

I mixed it up.

For the last two days, Maggie and I have been doing this "new" thing that involves me, her, her coaster car, a pillow, a string, some water, and a WHOLE LOT of FUN (direct quote from Mags, who is standing beside me as I write this).

Now, I can't exactly explain this....exactly. In fact I REALLY want Gary to film us doing this crazy new thing - maybe this weekend, since we won't be able to do this once we move, BUT...

The point is, we've been mixing it up. And it's working. I know I'm burning a bunch more calories then what I'm inputting but I have no clear measure at the moment.

Just YOU try hauling a 130 pound person up a hill and around the neighborhood. Repeatedly.

It's fun. And tiring. And good. And we're spending quality time together. And we're LAUGHING. Oh my goodness, we are laughing.

Just mixing it up.

There is going to come that day when we won't be able to do this particular thing anymore. But for now, it's my new treadmill, elliptical, bike ride...and then we'll move on to the next thing.

We'll just keep mixing it up.

Thanks, Stephanie.

Till next time!
