Day 19 - My New BERN...er...BURNdometer

OMG, so yesterday was BZZZZZZZZ Y!

I spent the bulk of the day running around with my kiddo - errands and back-to-school shopping and...oh, hey, I think I wrote about that once (are ya surprised? HA).

Check it out:

Hottest Backpacks for Girls - which reminds me, we have to head to Freeport before school starts.

ANYway, I want to talk about my package.

The one I received when I returned home (EXHAUSTED) yesterday.

PREZZZZZZIES!!!

I love presents.

Okay, I'm a tiny bit all over the place today. Let's get focused.

So, the other day I was on the Facecrack and my dear new friend Bernie sent me a link to Amazon for a pedometer that she had just purchased. I had planned to go on Thursday to buy a pedometer but my car schedule got switched and so I was just going to grab one Friday. Till she sent me this AWESOME link.

Here it is, if you are interested:

Ozeri 4X3Razor Digital Pocket Pedometer

...and it ROCKS! Heck, it does everything BUT walk your steps for you, YAY!

The price is right too, which is good because I'm on a budget and I don't like spending money on just me stuff most of the time. For less than $20 you can have the pedometer of your dreams (or pretty close to it, since what I LUST for is the FitBit, though that will just have to wait...) AND be walking/running/jogging (with proper support) your way to healthy.

This fancy pancy BERN...er...BURNdometer even tracks your calories burned, as well as keeps track up to 99 days for ALL steps taken...

But WAIT, there's more...

BAHHAHAHAHAHA.

Did I sound like Billy Mays (RIP) there for a minute?

ANYway.

I have named my new pedometer, in honor of the woman who linked it to me.

BERNdometer...or BURNdometer, if you're so inclined. I'm BURNING cals and BERNIE recommended it so there ya go.

Well, actually, Mr. Bernie found it but that's a whole nother story.

Now listen, my dear friend Bernie is not just a linky loo. She is totally awesome in all sorts of other ways too.

She blogs. Go on, click the link (I said); it's a crazy mixed bag but you won't be sorry.

She loves dogs. She's funny and smart. And she happens to be afflicted with much of the same crazy I have - though I will leave that up to you to decipher.

So that's it, all about my new little friend that is now attached at the hip (NOT Bernie, sillies, my new BERNdometer) and happily helping me on the way to a healthier ME.

YAY!

Till next time!

Day 18 - Dear Floppy Boobie Lady

I'm honestly not sure how inappropriate this post might get, certainly not enough to get an XXX rating by blogger, I hope.

And I AM going to try and share some advice.

But first, I must pen a note.

Dear Floppy Boobie Lady,

I saw you today, at the corner of Park and Forest. You were standing there as though to cross, waiting for the light to change. And you were jogging in place. I commend this, you didn't want to break your rhythm, the light was taking forever, and based upon your slender frame, you take this running thing pretty seriously (or so I'm guessing, since you are skinny and I am fat and that's how my mind works about those things sometimes).

As I watched you waiting for the light (I apologize for staring, it was hard to look away), I realized that I might have a bit of advice for you. I know, crazy, right? What could an overweight, half-asleep, crampy girl have to give you - running, skinny, pony-tail fixing girl? Just this:

BUY A SPORTS BRA!

No ONE wants to see those things flopping all over the place at 8am. Okay, I really don't know if NO one wants to see that so I'll just speak for myself. As you stood there, jogging and flopping and waiting for the light to change, I worried.

I worried for your back, your front, your dignity, and quite honestly wavered about asking Gary to pull over so I could explain these things to you. Maybe you think, eh, they aren't that big so a little flop is okay. Obviously you have never ran in place in front of a mirror. You should. It would shock you.

Take it from a fat girl who was also (at my thinnest, too) blessed with a large rack. You need support if you're to be doing all that running around. Your boobs will thank you, your back will thank you; heck if I ever see you again, I will personally thank you.

I strongly encourage you to run on over to the nearest sporting goods store (or Walmart, Target, WHATEVER) and get yourself a support bra for your next running adventure. Heck, you're probably able to shop online for your clothes, do it there.

I do sincerely hope I haven't offended. I really am concerned about your over all health in this regard. Though I do have one last question...

Why, when the light changed, did you suddenly decide to turn left and run up the other street when you stood facing traffic for a full 60 seconds or more?

G thought maybe you had another show at the corner up the street. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and figuring that you just don't KNOW what's going on there in front of you.

Now you do, go git 'er dun!

Cheers,
San

Please note: I really don't want to offend my loyal readers or anyone else (including floppy boobie lady) who happens upon this post. But I do want to stress the importance of proper support while working out. It's not JUST about looking good and I'm being serious (you don't want to see what I wear to the gym, really, ya don't). It's most(ly) about protecting your body as you work toward a healthier you.

I'm off to spend a day with Mags, back-to-schooling and the like. Hopefully when I get home my new BURNdometer (more on that tomorrow, I said) will be here and then I'll head to the gym to rack and track some miles, YAY!

Don't forget to give your body the support it needs in ALL ways - it (and you) darn well deserve it!

Till next time!

Day 17 con'd - It's Not Your Mom's Chicken Anymore...

Oh, I wavered with this...the Chick Fil A thing...

Should I say SOMEthing, ANYthing, Facebook it, ignore it, let others have their say and simply appreciate that we all have the right (thank you, America) to our own opinions, and move on?

And then I had a thought...or three...

Uh, oh.

I know. Scary...but here goes nothing...

I grew up lucky. My mom and dad raised me to believe that we are all created in His name and that He guides us (no matter how willful we are at any given time) on the path He has chosen for us.

I have never seen color.

I have never seen gender.

I love all people.

I am (for the most part, honestly, because we can all be snarky sometimes) non-judgemental.

I am honest.

I am kind.

I am generous.

I am human - not without faults.

My parents did that.

As I age, I have come to a place where I have just a couple criteria for whether I may consider you (or him or her, or they) a friend...

Have you murdered anyone?

Have you molested anyone?

If you can answer no to both those, then I'm going to give ya a chance. And even then, the circumstances surrounding a yes to either of those might be...well, anyway...I don't want anyone to miss my point.

And no apologies, this is going to be a LONG post.

So let's see, now we are friends. I don't care what your past brings, I don't care what others believe or don't believe, I don't bother with rumors that could muck up our new relationship; I ask only that you are honest and true - as I will be to you.

Now...here's where it gets a bit sticky.

I was raised by two of the most conservative Christians I've ever known.

Both my parents passed years too early and before I was grown enough to discuss my views or theirs in regard to certain things.

As I sit here, I don't know if my mom would be horrified by homosexuality and how OUT it is these days.

I can't tell you if my dad would have made it a point to visit Chick Fil A on Wednesday to support the CEO and his values.

Chances are they may not have had an opinion on it either way.

(...oh, how I wish for one more conversation with either of them...)

Chances are I'm of that mind because for the most part, I don't have an opinion on it either way.

I believe sincerely, that every human has a right to his or her opinions, thoughts, ways, and means.

I believe sincerely that the head guy at Chick Fil A is right in his opinions about gay marriage.

I believe sincerely that I am right in my opinions about gay marriage.

I believe sincerely that this whole freakin' thing has gotten way too out of control.

I believe sincerely that this sort of (freakin') thing happens a LOT.

We forget.

We forget that it shouldn't matter what someone else thinks or says or does (within reason, I'm not condoning murder, child abuse, thieving, or the like, geesh).

We forget that we are humans and we all love, hurt, cry, laugh, and make choices we'd rather forget.

We forget to remember that about other humans too.

I was genuinely shocked at some of the lines that were being drawn on Facebook and elsewhere over this Chick Fil A thing.

As a Christian - just a Christian - I was raised to be kind.

As a Christian I was raised to love my "brother" as I do myself.

As a Christian I was raised that hate is deplorable and must not fill my heart.

I am a Christian. Not a good one, not bad, either. Just a Christian.

I am also a human...

...who has spent the last several days in turmoil over this entire Chick Fil A mess.

I'm not trying to piss anyone off, I'm trying to make sense of a ridiculous, blown WAY out of proportion media frenzy.

Someone voiced an opinion. Someone else didn't like it. Other people made up fake stuff to prove their point. Others still got louder and made signs. Some showed up for chicken on Wednesday. Others stayed away specifically. And still others chose to ignore the whole darn thing.

Do I have the gist?

Because here's the bottom line:

With ALL the rights you (and me, and him, and her, and they) get to have in your life, the ONE right you will never have...

Is to tell/order/demand someone else to believe what you believe.

Educate. Encourage. Motivate. Mentor. Share...

But don't get so caught up in (a craziness) that you forget how to behave.

Don't act a fool and expect people to respect your place.

Believe what you believe, allow me to stand beside you and believe what I believe, and let's all just try to get along.

Have you thought of the alternative?

Now, listen... I didn't write this to make friends or lose them. I truly believe my God is a loving God and that's where it ends - my relationship with Him is mine alone. I am sure I'm not even being too clear on where I'm going with this, or where I've ended up.

Though I can tell you, honestly, I won't ever eat at a Chik Fil A again.

OMG, WHY?

Because I've only ever been once, we don't have them where I live, and I am trying to avoid fast food. My decision to go or not go has NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH MY OPINION ON GAY MARRIAGE.

Yep, I said it.

Now that it's out there, I'm also going to say this:

I love my family, and I love my friends, lots of whom I consider family. I don't always agree with them, nor they me, but that just makes us unique; for me, that's a good thing. I don't expect to change their minds about stuff, nor should they work too hard to change mine.

...because...

I have gay friends, white friends, black and brown friends, and sometimes blue friends. I have fat friends and skinny friends, and good friends and just smile 'n' wave friends. I have political friends and famous friends, and funny friends and sad friends. I have conservative friends and liberal friends and...

OMG, I am so lucky to have ALL my friends.

I love you all, you better believe it, UNconditionALLY. Because you are - simply - friends!

In our ever changing, evolving world, one thing we ALL must remember:

It's not your mom's chicken anymore.

Till next time!

Day 17 - And Then Life Happens

You know about life, right?

That pesky lil thing that is our whole existence...

Well, yesterday it got a bit in the way of what I WANTED to get done.

Rather than freak out, derail, self-sabotage, and cry about it, I EMBRACED it.

First?

What happened...

It seems that when I make a plan (sometimes) and say it out loud, it just doesn't go the way I'd...well, planned.

Yesterday I had PLANNED to work for at least 3 hours moving boxes, packing (stuff) and hauling it all to the first floor in preparation for our move. As we get closer to the date, I'm hoping that much of our big old, ridiculously spaced, and tired 'ol house will occupy the first floor and make it that much easier for ALL the helpers on moving day.

3 hours - which would have been a GLORIOUS number (love those numbers, I do...) on the calories burned scale.

90 minutes in?

I had to be done. I had forgotten about dinner plans at G's moms and I had other stuff that had to be done and then to get ready to go.

Okay, only 90 minutes yesterday, no biggie.

So then, after discussing with G about my having the car today, we decided that he needed it more.

Okay, so no trip to Walmart, no pedometer, no back-to-school with Punky - we'll go Friday. No biggie. I'll walk to the gym, do an hour on the treadmill, and spend time moving boxes etc. today.

Best laid plans...as they say...again.

I woke up this morning with an early morning visitor who sometimes comes in like a lamb. Not THIS darn month. She's here, she's pissed, and she is letting me know.

So today?

I PLAN to take it off - the whole day. I know what absolutely needs doing - and I'm not going to do another thing more. I deserve a day to rest and breathe and give in a little to my least favorite Auntie.

Which DOES NOT mean Stouffer's French Bread, powdered donuts, soda, ramen noodles, or any of that other crap she usually gets.

Firstly, she's not craving it, and secondly, even if she did, I'm just not giving in that far. A little I said, just a restful day to myself and for myself.

Selfish, yes. Self-sabotage, no.

Let's just see how these plans transpire.

Till next time!

Day 16 - 100 Miles in August - WHAT?

That's right, I said it. 100 miles in August.

But what does it MEAN?

Oh...well, hang on, I'll tell you.

My new friend (let's call her Anna) has given us all a challenge for August. Walk 100 miles over the course of the entire month. She writes - in her nifty blog - that this challenge was inspired by another loser (and by that, I mean WINNER) and she thought, "hey, let's DO this". <-- paraphrasing there, but you get it, right?

ANYway...

You can read right here for all the "rules 'n' stuff and then hop back over so we can talk about this 100 miles thingy.

Because I'm totally doing it - and you should too.

100 miles in August. 100 miles in 31 days. That's (exactly) 3.2258065 miles per day. Exactly. You may  round up or down, you may do 4 miles one day and 3 miles the next...or 7 miles (like that AWESOME and glittery loser, Anna) at a time and get ahead of the game.

However you do it, you CAN do it.

Let's break it down:

100 Miles

31 days

4+ weeks

...hmmm...can you walk/jog/run/swim/bike/treadmill/elliptical 100 miles in August?

It's only 25 miles a week.

AND you have an extra 3 days (going by weeks, here) on top of that.

Easy Peasy!

One thing I do recommend is running (...er walking, jogging, swimming, biking...) out and getting yourself a nifty lil pedometer to keep track of your miles. I'm going to pick a new one up (the old one is toast = sad face) tomorrow and can't wait to begin stepping my way toward healthy with Anna's challenge.

Oh, I did start today. It's the FIRST, isn't it?

But unless I'm at the gym I can't track it ALL properly. And since today is my weights/circuit day - which includes moving boxes, flights of stairs, and furniture, I won't be able to know exactly how many miles to mark.

Unless, of course, I do make it to the gym later for a stroll (usually 3+ miles) on the treadmill. But I'm being honest, the above workout is going to take me 3-4 hours and will burn more than 1000 calories so I don't see gym time in my day, today.

OMG, I'm rambling.

Who knew NOT weighing in would have me going on and on and ON.

Hey, I heard that snicker - HA. HA. You already know this on and on and ON thing about me.

No apologies. It's what I do.

Now let's all get moving.

Till next time!

Week Two - Whew, What a WEEK!

Today marks the first day of week 3 and boy oh BOY am I glad to see week 2 outta here.

Let's Recap:

Day Eight: 292.6 - WOW, I was down 13.8 pounds and feelin' FINE

Day Nine:  291.6 - Another pound down, crimany, I'm on fire.

Day 10: 291.8 - Uh, oh, I gained; two WHOLE ounces

Day 11: 291.6 - Whew, I lost those pesky lil ounces

Day 12: 292.2 - WHAT?? Oh, yah, I slipped. My very costly drink.

Day 13: 293.4 - Hmmm, APPARENTLY I'm payin' interest on it.

Day 14: 293.4 - Whew, didn't gain. Could I be paid in full?

Day 15: 291.6 - Oh look, we've seen THIS number a time or three.

So Yah...

This WHOLE week I lost a total of one pound. I am down 14.8 pounds in 14 days. Pretty impressive numbers unless you actually look at the two weeks - together and separately.

First week?

ROCKED it. In fact, I went WAY beyond what I expected. Given my size, I wasn't too concerned about the large drop. When you factor in water weight and getting back into the gym, plus the diet (food) change, it was inevitable that I lose a large number.

Second week?

Oh, pfft. I thought it was going to be THAT (first week) easy ALWAYS? As if! I slipped (more than once), I lied to myself a couple times, and I generally wasn't holding myself accountable in the ways I did the first week.

And it showed.

Now, lest you think I'm bummed about one pound down? I'm not. Experts (crazy people we call "they") say 1-2 pounds lost per week is healthy and acceptable.

Okay, fine.

But I can't do to myself what I did this past week.

I NEED to stay focused as in week one! This, my friends, is my goal this week.

Remaining accountable, moment by moment, all through the week.

That said, I'm done weighing in daily. At least for this week. With my Magpie home, it's too much to try an weigh in, make a healthy breakfast, do gym time before anyone else is up, blah, blah, blah.

It's better in the head too (or so THEY say). We'll just see how the week progresses.

I will weigh in on Saturday for Barb's numbers. And again next Tuesday for my own lil sched. This actually will give me time to write about OTHER stuff daily. Tips, tricks, and whatever else is a'runnin' through this 'ol head.

And I've got LOTS to say.

Till next time!

Day 14 - OMG, I Didn't Gain - WooHOO!

Yes...

...er, it's more like YESSSSSSS!!!

I didn't gain.

And darn well I shouldn't. I was a very good girl yesterday. I believe the ONLY reason that I didn't lose anything was because we were up late picking my darling daughter up from the airport and I'm up early now, working on getting this day started.

The last day of my first two weeks of the rest of my life.

YAY!

I consider this a win and that said, it's going in (said) win column!

Let's go back to sleep...

ZZZZZZ zzzzz ZZZZZ...

Oooops, I mean, let's talk about it for a minute!

Sleep - getting enough of it - is so very important for your weight loss success. I even wrote about it once; let me dig that one out...

3 Best Tips (4 - 5 - 6) for Your Weight Loss Success

(as you can see, I've been to this rodeo more than once or twice)

Anyway, sleep is important. You know that. I know, too, that we can't always get as many zzz's as we'd like. Just try aiming for 6-8 hours of restful sleep per night and you will absolutely aid your weight loss process - as well as a whole bunch of other good things (go click that link, I said).

Ahhh, sleep.

Well, Punky IS home, so I will be missing sleep, haha...a tad bit. But since she is so very supportive of mommy, I'm sure she'll understand if I snooze a bit longer in the mornings.

Heck, that lil stinker is still passed out and here I thought she'd be UP and rarin' to go.

Darn jet-lag.

Either way, I'm up and must get moving on the day. Hope it's a GREAT one for everyone! Don't forget to make it count!

Till next time!
